I got to early vote today! After a few times voting in the past few years, it has gotten much easier to understand the information on the forms, the procedures to vote early, and where to find information about candidates.
For a long time while I was living abroad I wasn't able to vote, because in order to vote absentee, you have to have a stable address for your ballot to be mailed, but I was moving frequently. A few thousand dollars round trip to vote in person wasn't feasible, either. I hope there can be better solutions to this someday.
One of the ways to feel better about the world, I'm told, is to get more involved in your local community rather than focusing on country-scale or global-scale politics. I've gotten into volunteering when I've been able to (most commonly at a local garden!), but I'm curious about getting involved in more ways, too. The barrier to entry feels high; I find a local politics confusting to navigate, and all of the meetings that are open to the public are at the worst possible times for someone who works a 9-5 type job.
I do want to ask for bicycle parking at polling sites though, so I want to try calling my representative to suggest the idea after election season has quieted down. Scary (phone call), but a small, actionable, straightforward thing to try. Maybe that will be my catalyst. I hope they're nice.
