Defining oneself in opposition to something only gives power to the thing being opposed.
This is a really tough idea to embody. There is so much to be opposed to and very valid reasons to be opposed to those things. Being opposed to said thing is not in itself wrong, of course; the issue comes when the opposition becomes the focus. "No press is bad press."
Instead, focusing on being pro-stuff gives power and attention to things that are good. Tim Minchin put this beautifully in his 9 Life Lessons speech1.
Much of the social internet is spent fighting over ideals. I'd much rather interact with an internet where we bolster the voices of people doing good in the world.
