Before modern technology, communities must have been so much different than they are today. Most people in a place probably lived there their entire lives, surrounded by the same people.
Now, people move all the time. It feels rare for someone to stay in one place for their whole lives; or, at least that's how it feels in the populations I belong to.
I'm grateful for how much I've travelled and how many places I've lived throughout my life and I recognize that I'm incredibly priveledged to have done so.
What's missing is the lifelong community, where people take care of each other and can rely on others taking care of them. I can't imagine a village in the long past of humanity where people would pass up someone who needed help. Yet, now we live in fear and greed, not knowing how we'll fare when we're need in the future.
We're also so used to being taken advantage of that we can't reliably sort a true request for help from a scam.
I usually try to end these blog posts on some final-sounding thought, but I'm just as lost in a solution as I am in the problem.
