I've been casually learning Japanese for the past year or so, mainly using the Renshuu1 app.
A few days ago I finally got caught up with learning a big set of hundreds of kanji. I still need a lot of practice with all these new characters, which the app will rotate for me, but I've at least been introduced to the entire beginners' set.
I'm noticing that I can catch a few words and phrases when hearing Japanese spoken, and I can pick a few words out of text and sometimes even a general meaning of a sentence. I'm grateful that the app rotates multiple fonts because I can recognize characters even when the exact styling changes.
Once I get my reviews down to a manageable level, I can finally return to learning more of the grammer, but also seeking other sources of learning like videos and in translating sentences that are otherwise very difficult for me to read.
